Schaffhausen, capital of the canton of the same name, has about 36 '000 inhabitants and is the most northerly town in Switzerland. It bears the nickname "oriel city" because 171 oriels adorn the richly decorated town houses in the car-free streets of the well-preserved old town that enchants visitors from near and far with its medieval charm. The Munot, an imposing fortress from the 16th century, is regarded as Schaffhausen’s emblem and now serves as a venue and cultural centre. Located in the tower is the apartment of the Munot guard. He rings the famous Munot bell which dates back to the year 1589 every night at 21.00 o’clock. Historically significant are the All Saints Abbey and the associated Münster (minster), the largest Romanesque building in Switzerland which was completed at the end of the 11th century. In the bombing of Schaffhausen during WW2 parts of the monastery were destroyed and later rebuilt. Particularly noteworthy is the monastery cloister built in Romanesque and Gothic style. Located here is the bell “Schillerglocke”, casted in 1486 and showpiece of the cathedral until 1895. It’s inscription “Vivos voco, mortuos plango, fulgura frango“ (I call the living; mourn the dead; I break the lightning) served Schiller as motto for his famous “Lied von der Glocke” (song of the bell). The river Rhine plays a special part in Schaffhausen as it is the reason for the city’s development approx. 1000 AD. The geographical location was ideal, because there was a wide and very flat place where one could cross the river safely with the horses. The rapids and the Rheinfall interrupted the waterway from Lake Constance to Basel, so that the ships had to unloaded here and reload the goods onto wagons. This promoted the development of Schaffhausen to an important trading centre. The Rhine Falls, the most abundant in water and largest waterfall in Europe, is just a few km from Schaffhausen. This grandiose natural spectacle attracts tourists in droves from all over the world every year. Whether bed & breakfasts, hotel, apartment, room or private accommodation - Schaffhausen offers a suitable accommodation for every guest.
