Bed and Breakfast in Lenzburg
With about 9,000 inhabitants, the romantic town of Lenzburg is located in the Canton of Aargau in the midst of a region with many interesting sights and picturesque destinations. Visible for miles around, towering on top of a cliff is the castle of the same name, one of the most important castles in Switzerland. The medieval old town is located at the castle’s foot in a horseshoe shape with listed buildings, picturesque alleys, and fountains. Built in the 11th century by the Counts of Lenzburg, the castle changed hands several times throughout history. It served as the seat for the Staufer, the Kyburg, the Habsburg, and the Bernese bailiffs for over 350 years. In the 19th century, control of the castle went to the State, and it was run as a boys' school based on the principles of Pestalozzi. Later, it was acquired by the father of the poet Frank Wedekind, who spent his youth here. From 1893, it belonged to an American who re-furbished the castle befitting his wife’s rank as a member of the British Royal Family. In 1911, it was sold to another American businessman, whose son Lincoln Ellsworth (a polar explorer) sporadically lived here. Following his death, a foundation established by the city of Lenzburg and the Canton Aargau was able to acquire the castle in 1956. It was restored and made accessible to the public, and is now home to the Historical Museum. The castle (with the knight’s home, courtyard and baroque garden) serves as a unique backdrop for theatre performances and concerts. Lenzburg is also very popular with tourists due to its central location and good transportation connections. Zurich, Bern or Luzern are easily accessible. Only a few kilometres away is the Hallwilersee (a paradise for leisure seekers, nature lovers, and water sport enthusiastics), plus other noteworthy castles Wildegg, Habsburg, and Hallwyl (one of the most famous moated castles in Switzerland). With its museums, the Aargauer Literaturhaus, and the concert events, (for example, the summer concert Lenzburgiade), Lenzburg is an insider’s tip for culture enthusiasts. With around 700 companies, including the company Hero, Lenzburg is also an important business centre. Tourists or business people will find traditional hotels, romantically-located bed & breakfasts, affordable apartments, and private accommodations or rooms.
